- 180 GRAM VINYL. AUDIOPHILE PRESSING. DIRECT METAL MASTERING. LIMITED EDITION. Memphis Minnie (1897-1973) was one of the most influential artists and colorful figures in blues for nearly three decades. Along with Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red she was one of the pioneers and giants of the Chicago blues scene. This essential edition contains 17 studio tracks consisting of a discerning selection of Memphis Minnie’s prolific recording catalogue including a variety of the sensational sides she made for different labels (such as Okeh Columbia Vocalion Decca Bluebird J.O.B. and the Chess Records subsidiary Checker) between 1930 and 1953. Although her career extended well into the 1940s and she was still active in the 1950s Minnie is mainly remembered for her sanguine contribution to the developing urban blues scene of the 1930s when she cemented her place in blues history with such classics as “Bumble Bee” “Hoodoo Lady” “What’s the Matter with the Mill?” “My Butcher Man” and the rowdy sing-along number “Shout the Boogie.” Also included here are Minnie’s most famous and enduring singles of the 1940s (like the staple “Me and My Chauffeur Blues” and the slow number “In My Girlish Days”) as well as lesser-known tracks which are just as enjoyable as the classics such as “Pig Meat on the Line” “Squat It” and her last commercial recording after 24 years in blues music “Kissing in the Dark” (1953). This collection on vinyl represents the cream of the crop of Memphis Minnie’s musical legacy. It is a truly indispensable set for any blues devotee.
