This quintessential LP edition presents one of Brook Benton’s finest albums Lie to Me: Brook Benton Singing the Blues which was originally issued on the Mercury label in 1962 and has been long unavailable on vinyl. The timbre of Benton’s voice was very similar to that of Nat “King” Cole but there were subtle differences in their delivery because Cole had a jazz background whereas Benton had sung in a gospel choir. Oddly enough these splendid recordings feature a virtual who’s who of great sidemen from the Nashville country music and rockabilly scenes (the so-called “A-Team”) including the impressive guitarist Harold Bradley bassist Bob Moore pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins and drummer Buddy Harman among others. Brook Benton was also accompanied by the backing vocalists The Merry Melody Singers.
In addition to the original masterpiece this Vinyl Lovers collector’s edition also contains 2 bonus tracks from the same recording sessions which weren’t included on the album: “Still Waters Run Deep” and the splendid “Hotel Happiness.”
