Sonny Rollins’ music heard here belongs to the same extended engagement featuring Sonny Rollins performing in different formats with members of the Modern Jazz Quartet that produced the music on another LP issued on a different label: The Modern Jazz Quartet Guest Artist: Sonny Rollins (Atlantic 1299). Rollins and John Lewis had previously recorded together on a few sessions as sidemen for J.J. Johnson in 1949 and for Miles Davis in 1951 and the saxophonist had made a full LP with the MJQ for Prestige in October 1953. The sessions at Music Inn however would mark their final recordings together. Note: “Doxy” was issued as “John’s Other Theme” on the original LP. Although both Rollins and Teddy Edwards appear on the cover the Edwards tracks were recorded at a completely different venue the following year.
