Primarily a street musician in his early career the legendary Reverend Gary Davis was a powerful blind gospel and folk-blues singer and masterful acoustic guitarist. He produced a polyphonic style with the use of only his thumb and index fi nger. His virtuosic fi nger picking was an important infl uence on many other musicians such as Blind Boy Fuller and Brownie McGhee. During the 1950s and 1960s Davis taught and performed in New York City becoming a beloved mentor to urban folk legends like Ramblin’ Jack Elliott Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan to name a few. This remastered CD release presents one of Davis’ most iconic albums Harlem Street Singer which was originally issued by the Prestige/Bluesville label in 1961. The LP was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his studio in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey. Gary Davis plays nothing but the acoustic guitar and sings straight to the bone with his gospel drenched vocal delivery. In addition to the original masterpiece this collector’s edition also contains 8 bonus tracks including a number of solo recordings from the same period. It is truly an indispensable set for any blues fan.
