The complete original albums Jazz at the Plaza vols. 1 & 2 (Columbia C-32470 & C-32471) which contained the musical results of a party thrown by Columbia to celebrate the healthy state of their jazz division. It was not meant to be a recording session as stated by Irving Townsend the original producer on the original liner notes: “It was a party. We taped it because we wanted to remember it in case it never happened again.” The event brought together the talents of the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring John Coltrane Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans) the Duke Ellington Orchestra (showcasing the singing of Jimmy Rushing on a few songs) and Billie Holiday who performed two tracks. As a bonus to this unique concert we have included two rare live broadcasts of the Miles Davis Sextet from the same period (at the end of CD1) as well as additional live performances by the Ellington band taped in Paris shortly after the Plaza concert (closing CD2).
