This release present the complete original LP New Jazz Sounds (Norgran MGN-1044/Verve MGV-8135) which marked the first small group collaboration between Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie. A reading of “Laura” that completes the first session but wasn’t included on the original LP has been added here as well as two long live performances that feature Carter and Gillespie as members of Jazz at the Philharmonic in 1960. The two musicians would tour Europe together in 1966 but wouldn’t be recorded again in a small group format until 1976.
