Just after John Coltrane left him and before the arrival of Charlie Rouse, Thelonious Monk formed a quartet with Johnny Griffin, which played at the Five Spot Café, in New York, during 1958. They were recorded there and most of the results were issued on two albums: In Action (Riverside RLP12-262) and Misterioso (Riverside RLP12-279). This 2-CD set contains all known music from that gig plus, as a bonus, a rare version of “Coming on the Hudson” by Monk in a sextet that included Griffin, Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams, and a version of “Misterioso” presenting the pianist along with Sonny Rollins.

THELONIOUS MONK, piano; JOHNNY GRIFFIN, tenor sax; AHMED-ABDUL MALIK, bass; ROY HAYNES, drums. Live at the Five Spot Café, New York, August 7 & July 9, 1958.
NOTE: ART BLAKEY (d) replaces Roy Haynes on CD2, track 8, only. Monk plays unaccompanied piano on “Just a Gigolo” and “Sweet Stranger”.
