This release contains all of the studio recordings made by the great Miles Davis with J.J. Johnson for the Blue Note label. The master takes from the sessions (along with another date by the Miles Davis Quartet without J.J.) originally appeared on three consecutive LPs Young Man with a Horn (BLP 5013) Miles Davis Vol.2 (BLP 5022) and Miles Davis Vol.3 (BLP 5040) with further takes appearing on Enigma (BLP5071). Miles and J.J. are backed on these sides by such celebrated jazz masters as Jimmy Heath Jackie McLean Oscar Pettiford Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey among others. Miles and J.J. had first worked together in 1946 as members of the Benny Carter orchestra and their last recordings together date from 1963.
