Released in 1994 Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral placed the band firmly on the musical map and the album remains one of the most important of the industrial genre. However shortly after its release the record had to contend with some unlikely competition. David Bowie’s 1995 album Outside was considered a major return to form harking back to the stark majesty of his “Berlin” era. Based on a complex non-linier narrative derived from a short story it depicted a dystopian future in which the ultimate value of art is decided by government agencies forcing the underground to go to new extremes to realise their visions. Although not as commercially successful as The Downward Spiral Outside is still considered one of Bowie’s best and most underrated albums. So going with the old adage “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” Nine Inch Nails supported Bowie on the U.S. leg of his Outside Tour. With the presentation of each show somewhat subdued with low-key set design and limited onstage theatrics Bowie included few of his old classics - save for the likes of ‘Scary Monsters’ and ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ - instead playing mainly tracks from his new release. And at the conclusion each night of Nine Inch Nails’ set the band would remain onstage as Bowie appeared and the two acts would perform together to make for one continuous program. One such gig is included on this CD recorded at the Shoreline Amphitheatre California on 21st October 1995. Broadcast nationwide on FM radio the sound here is close to perfect while the dynamic combination of these musical goliaths needs to be heard to be believed.
