Description
Classic Radio Broadcasts: 1968 saw The Doors arrive at the height of their fame. The press were hailing the band as America s Rolling Stones their eponymous debut album had been voted the second best album of the year 1967 by The Village Voice behind only The Beatles Sergeant Pepper and Jim Morrison had been voted Vocalist of The Year. In July their third album Waiting For The Sun and the single Hello I Love You both hit number 1 and broke the band in Europe. Yet all was not well. The recording of Waiting For The Sun had been a fraught experience. Morrison had exhausted much of the material that he had accumulated prior to 67 and had struggled to generate new ideas. Recent live performances had seen him drunk high and belligerent provoking both his audience and the authorities and confounding his band mates. When Morrison finally announced his intention to quit the group just weeks before the start of their first European tour Ray Manzarek had to persuade him to postpone his decision for a further six months. Yet it was a tour that completely revitalized both Morrison and the band. In the UK the British press and public gave the band a rapturous welcome and the heaviness that had blighted recent months back home in the US instantly lifted. Their opening gigs at The Roundhouse in Camden became the stuff of rock legend with Paul McCartney George Harrison Mick Jagger Keith Richards Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood all present to see The Doors bring the house down. The trend continued across dates in Germany Holland and Denmark before The Doors supported by Jefferson Airplane took to the stage at The Stockholm Concert Hall in Sweden for their final tour performances later remembered by The Doors as amongst the finest gigs that they ever played. Stockholm Serenade presents the complete recordings from Konserthuset Stockholm on September 20th 1968 the final legendary shows of The Doors only European tour and one of the most important moments in the band s singular story.
